Happy 2025, friend!
Whether or not you take on New Year’s resolutions, getting healthier is on many people’s minds.
Simple habits add up over time and result in a happier mood, weight loss, improved bloodwork and an overall sense of well being.
Here are 7 habits that are important to get and stay healthy.
1. Eat clean.
Cutting out junk foods with chemicals, refined sugar and carbs, processed meats and seed oils is a great place to start.
Replacing less healthy foods with options such as organic vegetables and fruits, lean meats such as chicken and fish and healthy fats such as olive oil and coconut oil can make a big difference in how we feel as well as our health. The old adage has truth — we are what we eat!
2. Movement.
The simple habit of movement can reap us big gains in the health department.
For example, walking for just 30 minutes a day can lead to improved heart health, as well as decreased risk of chronic diseases and a better mood.
3. Get daily sunlight.
Sunlight is such an important part of living healthy. In our modern world, we spend so much time indoors, and as a result, we don’t get the sunlight we need.
Sunlight is important for vitamin D synthesis, which supports our immune system, bone health and more. Getting in the sun helps our bodies to release serotonin, which can help combat depression.
Spend some time every day getting in the sun. You’ll feel the difference!
(If you need a good sunscreen, this is one of my favorites.)
4. Drink purified water.
This might be a tall order, but I would be remiss not mentioning this one!
Sadly due to the chemicals in our air that creep into our water systems, water from a tap will contain substances that are unhealthy for us to drink.
The best type of water to drink that leaves harmful chemicals behind is distilled water.
Many people opt to distill their own water at home, but you can also buy it from the store.
A note though — distilled water leaves behind toxins such as heavy metals, bacteria, and VOCs, but it also leaves behind minerals. We’ll talk about that next.
5. Supplement.
I would personally love it if we lived in a world that did not have chemicals, and our food supply had all the nutrients it used to. Sadly, this is not the case.
Due to farming practices that have depleted the soil and the chemicals in our world, the foods we eat today are not what they used to be. Organic is much better, but due to these deficiencies in our soil, our foods don’t have the vitamins and minerals that they used to. We just talked about how distilled water leaves chemicals behind, but it also leaves behind minerals as well.
Though there are many supplements that are highly beneficial, I think it’s important for everyone to think about a good multi as a first step. One that I am excited about at the moment is Dr. Mercola’s multivitamin. If you want to save 25% on a first order through Fullscript, drop me a line at charis@itcouldhelp.com!
6. De-stress.
Chronic stress is connected to so many diseases. It’s important for us to rest and do things to relax and get our minds off of our stressors in life, especially if we can’t completely avoid the stressor.
Some ways to do this include taking time to reflect and journal, stretching and breathing, walking in a park and getting out in nature. Make sure to schedule time to de-stress in your calendar.
7. Detox.
So we’ve talked about the toxins in our world, and that leads me to another topic — detox.
Many of us have a lifetime of toxins built up in our bodies. Though eating healthy and supplementing with a good multi will help to remove some of these toxins, others are more difficult to get rid of.
Signs you may need to detox include irritability, skin issues, chronic pain, digestion issues, inflammation and overall lethargy.
